Toasted Marshmallow Milkshake

image

Recently, I was at a farm spending time with family and roasting marshmallows over an open fire. The sunset that night was breathtaking. It was cloudy and windy that day and the way the vibrant colors bounced off the fluffy clouds would make anyone stop in their tracks just to soak it all in.

Shortly after the sun went down, another amazing thing happened. The sky cleared up and I was again drawn upwards. Living in a city, I’m rarely given the opportunity to see a sky filled with millions of stars. It’s incredible how many are actually visible from the countryside.

As we were roasting marshmallows, carefully selecting the best area of the fire and rotating them at the perfect speed to get the oh-so-desirable “browned” look, I was reminded of a milkshake that I made last year.

It is the perfect fall treat and there’s no need to gather up logs.  It can be made with a blender and oven.

Look for the recipe after the images…

Toasted Marshmallow Milkshake Recipe

We made the following adjustments to the recipe:

1. We found the recipe to be way too runny, so we started with 1 cup of milk and added more milk by the tablespoon and more ice cream by the scoop as needed. (We prefer a thicker shake)

2. We substituted the sour cream for creme fraiche

3. We lined the pan with aluminum foil for an easy cleanup.

The Lori Bracelet by EVRT Studio: : Behind The Scenes

I couldn’t be happier with the way this hand-crafted beauty turned out. I am continually inspired by the work my husband has done. He leaves me in awe on a daily basis.

I believe the journey to this bracelet began years ago on the night before our wedding. Brian gave me a beautiful wooden pendant with a silver branch inlay. That Christmas he gave me another beautiful necklace made by an artist. That began a wonderful tradition.

Last Christmas, I opened the box to see a matching bracelet and necklace, hand carved and painted. He asked me, “Guess who the artist is for these.” To my surprise, it was him! Shortly after this, we decided that the bracelet, which he named “The Lori Bracelet,” would be our first piece of jewelry created under EVRT studio. Eleven months later, it has officially launched.

Below is a behind the scenes look at the creation of the bracelet, along with the photo shoot images.

Enjoy!

The Process : :

image

image

Watch the Video of Brian creating the facets. He carefully designs the facets on each bracelet during this process. I’m amazed at how good and fast he’s gotten at this step. This is the time when the design of the bracelet really comes to life.

The Photo Shoot : :

We wanted a natural setting, with a monochromatic palette for the photo shoot to allow the vibrant color of the bracelet to take center stage. A rural, Midwestern farm on a brisk, fall day provided the perfect setting. The switchgrass was blowing in the wind creating a very serene atmosphere and the most amazing rustling sound.

Perfectly Rich White Hot Chocolate

image

As we enter into the holiday season I catch myself daydreaming about a perfectly rich, perfectly sweet drink for a cold night. A White Hot Chocolate is the ultimate caffeine free end to a winter night.

Snuggled up on the couch, under a warm blanket, watching a great flick with your loved one, next to a crackling fire….. sipping on a cup of white hot chocolate. As a favorite comedic character of mine would say, “Could there be anything better?!”

I use skim milk because I feel that paired with the half & half it gives the perfect amount of richness. You may substitute 2% or whole milk for a richer flavor.

Perfectly Rich White Hot Chocolate

4 to 5 servings

Ingredients:

1 cup white chocolate chips

1 cup skim milk

4 cups half & half

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Combine the white chocolate chips and skim milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring continuously until chips have melted. Add the half & half and vanilla, stirring periodically until heated through.

* You may wish to add whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon for some added flare

The Reveal : :

Living Room

This room went through two versions of the design process. Below is the first iteration. In this initial design we opted for more of a reading / sitting room feel. We anchored the room with a large bookshelf, filled with design books, vintage cameras, and various trinket-esque finds. The room was furnished with two chairs: An original Eero Saarinen chair and a danish inspired wooden chair found at a local vintage store. A white, shag rug was placed on the floor. The walls were filled with artwork and the TV wall was a sad little story. Out of a lack-of-other furnishings we filled that wall with more shelving.

image

image

image

Round 2 of the living room design was much more conducive to our needs and design intent. The large bookshelf was removed to allow more flow and floor space in the room. A love seat was added in the mid-century style to soften the room and increase its functionality. The hard-to-keep-clean shag rug was replaced with FLOR carpet tiles, a branch bookshelf was added to the orange, feature wall as a focal point, and an awesome vintage record player was added to the TV wall.

Legwarmers, back in style. . .

Maybe it’s because I was a child of the 80’s, but I love legwarmers! They are making a comeback and I’ve decided to join in. I haven’t been brave enough to wear them on their own, so for now, I’ve paired them with a pair of boots.

The Project : :

Living Room

Details : :

* Paint the ceiling, beams, and walls

* Replace the front door

* Furnish and add some design flare

The living room had great potential, but was in need of a vision. The walls were an unappealing “flesh” tone. The exposed vaulted ceiling became the selling point for us in purchasing this home. Because of this, we knew that it needed special attention. Had the wooden beams been left natural, with a stain, we would have kept them as is. Instead they had several coats of paint on them, the latest being an unusual, brown finish with a hint of purple. We knew this had to go.

image

image

You can see that the “flesh” tone walls continue into the upper level of the home.  The dirty, stained carpeting on the stairs was certainly NOT a great selling point to the house. Luckily for us, beautiful wood floors lay underneath.

image

It’s amazing what a good scrubbing will do. I don’t think these window sills had been cleaned in 10 years. (Note: this was right before we switched to all “green” cleaners. That particular bottle will not be found in our house again)

image

We decided to paint both the ceiling and beams a bright white to add height, draw light into the room, and accentuate the vaulted ceiling. Unfortunately, this meant a lot of time spent on a ladder. B spent several days up on a ladder applying four coats of paint to cover the beams!

The walls were to become a beige color. We wanted to separate the ceiling from the walls and allow the bright white trim work to pop from the walls. Going with a neutral beige allowed us to do this. What we didn’t realize was how difficult it would be to select a beige color. In my opinion, it would prove to be the most difficult color selection of our entire house. What we ended up with was a large pile of test cans in our basement. Thank goodness for those small paint tester cans! I would highly recommend this for anyone. The paper paint strips just do not show true to the actual colors. The above image shows a rejected beige. That one was too green. We had others that were too pink.

image

The ceiling is complete and primer is going on the walls. This image shows off the front door that would be replaced with one that was more visually appealing.

image

Finally, the perfect beige was selected!

image

This wall was designed to become the “feature wall”. It was the wall that visually tied together the entire house. It’s the first wall you see when you enter the front door, it extends to the ridge of the roof, and it slices through the entire house. Because of this, we chose to play up the wall by finishing it in a bold orange. The orange could not be too red or too yellow, it had to be just right.

image

B beginning the finish on the feature wall.

image

We carried the orange finish up the stairs to the bathroom cove, joining the main level to the upper level.

image

Finally to the most exciting stage! Adding the artwork! Artwork is a huge part of our lives. Our walls are plastered in it. Having the neutral tone walls for a majority of the Living Room allowed the color to come from the art as opposed to the walls.

image

We found a few new pieces of furniture to tie the room together and blend our mid century modern style. This danish-esque chair was found at a local thrift store. We never found any labels on it, but we’d love to know where it came from. I ended up re-upholstering the cushion and adding a back pillow.

image

This foot stool was found at a local antique store for a whopping $10! With its tapered wooden legs, the style fit perfectly.

Ready to see the finished product! The big reveal will be published soon!

One Architect + One Product Designer = Design Love Bliss

image

I consider myself one lucky lady. I am married to the love of my life, my best friend, and a fellow lover of all things design. Our conversations are filled with brainstorming ideas for home renovations, crafts and ideas for his freelance business EVRT Studio. Being a design duo, our inspiration is an obvious choice: The Magnificent Charles and Ray Eames!

image

image

My love for crafting and DIY began at a very young age. We did not have all of the latest and greatest toys; instead we spent hours upon hours turning rock piles into mountains and bushes into Care Bear clouds (yep, you heard that right). Some of my fondest memories as a child were when I was elbow to elbow with my loved ones; hands engaged in building Easter egg displays from sugar, dolls from flowers, and Christmas trees from garland and hangers. I revived this love as an adult by learning how to sew and knit. This has brought me a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction.

I also chose a career that would allow me to continue to develop my creativity as an Architect. This has proved to be a very fulfilling career choice for me. No two days are ever the same. Everyday brings a new design challenge. And, I get to see my work unveil itself during the construction process. There is no greater feeling than to see an old, abandoned building, destined for destruction, be given a new life; a second chance at making an impact in its community.

image

image

A few years ago, my husband and I took a big step. We purchased our first house, a fixer upper at that. The following years we spilled our blood, sweat, and tears into the house, transforming it into our home. Stay tuned for a series of entries discussing our home renovation.

Owl Crinkle Toy Refashion

image

It’s soft, it crinkles, and part of it is made from an old T Shirt. My love for owls is growing so it was only a matter of time before I created an owl softie toy. To create this owl, I had my handy, dandy husband draft up a template for me to trace, based on my sketch. The light blue material was cut from an old T Shirt (I love a good refashion). Instead of sewing the wings down to the body, I kept the inside edge loose so that little hands could be slipped into the “pockets” that are created by the wings. I used a soft, fleece fabric for the outside of the wings to give a nice tactile feel. There is a contrasting fabric on the inside of the wings and backside of the owl. I chose to create the nose and eyes out of felt (instead of buttons or googly eyes) to avoid choking hazards. Lastly, babies LOVE anything that crinkles. So, I cut up a diaper wipes bag and plastic cereal liner to add the crinkle affect. For the stuffing, I used a loose fill for the owl body and a batting liner for the wings.

image

image

And when we are done with the toy… It gets the touchdown football slam!

Star Wars Finger Puppets

Let’s be honest… Who doesn’t love Star Wars!

image

This gift was probably catered more towards the parents than the kids, but what a great way to get both involved! This is a great way to polish those hand embroidery skills. All you need is some felt and embroidery floss! All of the characters were whipstitched around the edges. Most of the other stitching was a standard running stitch. For R2D2, I used both running stitches and back stitches. I had the most difficulties with Chewbacca. I ended up using both dark brown and a glossy, light brown embroidery floss to create highlights and texture for his hair.

Tilly and Tommy Elephant

image

Now that Halloween is over it’s officially time to start thinking about the holiday season! Last year I decided to make several Christmas gifts, in lieu of purchasing. There is this personal connection and satisfaction that can only be felt when you’ve invested time and care into creating something with your own hands.

What I discovered last year is that making gifts takes a lot of time! I generally allow a couple of months to complete the gifts. So, now is the time to get started!

Two of my favorite gifts that I made last year were boy / girl elephants inspired by the Tilly and Tommy Elephant pattern created by RetroMama found Here.

They are a modern take on the traditional stuffed elephant with the clean, simple lines and non-traditional fabric patterns.

They are perfect for little hands to cuddle with or little heads to lay on!

Reusable Sandwich Bag

image

I hate the idea of using wasteful plastic baggies everyday for lunches so I decided to make my own reusable sandwich bag! I did not want any plastic involved in these bags so I decided to use unbleached muslin as the basis.

At first my husband had some concerns about using these bags:

Question:  “Um, won’t it get all gross since it’s not plastic?”

Answer: “Nope. There are lots of things that can go in these bags that are not liquid based - sandwiches, chips, carrots, etc. And they are washable. If the bag gets a little mayo on it, just throw it in the wash.”

Question: “It’s a breathable fabric. Isn’t the bread going to get stale.”

Answer: “Yikes, I hadn’t thought about that. Let’s try it out and see what happens.”

Well, we tested the bag and it worked great. The reusable bag was kept inside of his larger lunch bag and the sandwich stayed nice and fresh.

image

I made this bag a generous size so that we could get a nice sized, full flavor sandwich into it. I plan on making smaller versions for snack packs.

Tutorial:

Small piece of sturdy, unbleached muslin (approximately “8 x  16.5”)

Orange thread

White thread

Orange & green embroidery floss

7” strip of 3/4” wide sew-on velcro

Embroidery needle

Sewing machine

Directions:

Cut 2 rectangles from the muslin - (1) 8” x 7 1/2” & (1) 8” x 9”.

Press both pieces.

Take the smaller rectangle and zig-zag stitch (or serge) one end with white thread.

Next, take that same edge and fold over (towards the wrong side) to create a 1/2” hem.

Press and stitch to hem with white thread.

Take this rectangular piece and sketch a design on the right side of the fabric with pencil or removable marking pen. The hemmed edge will be the top side.

Hand embroider the design. For the carrot design I used 3 strands of floss to outline the carrot and 2 strands for the detail work inside the carrot, along with the roots and stems. To create a continuous line I used a back stitch.

Once the embroidery is complete, lay the 2 pieces of muslin, wrong side together, aligning the bottom edge. The hemmed edge is the top edge.

Align the velcro so that the 2 pieces will lock together once the top flap has been folded over. Mark, pin, and sew velcro to both pieces of fabric with white thread. The velcro should fit on the right side of the embroidered piece and the wrong side of the back piece.

Now, align the two pieces wrong side together, once again, and pin.

Top stitch using a zig-zag stitch around all 4 sides with the orange thread.

Voila! You are Done!

Reeses Peanut Butter Cupcake Surprise!

Last year I made the amazing discovery of peanut butter buttercream icing. In one word : A-mazing! Ever since, I’ve been trying to think of the best ways to make use of the delightfully, delicious treat. So, without further ado - I introduce to you -

Reeses Peanut Butter Cupcake Surprise!

image

Most of the recipes that I’ve seen for Reeses Peanut Butter Cup cupcakes called for chocolate cupcakes. I am a huge fan of chocolate, but in this instance I feel that the chocolate cupcake overwhelms the dish. In my mind, the star of this recipe is the peanut butter buttercream, and the chocolate cake takes away from this. So, for this recipe I used a basic vanilla cupcake (you could also purchase a box of vanilla cupcakes if you’re in a pinch) and a basic vanilla buttercream recipe, substituting peanut butter for the vanilla.

Vanilla Cupcakes:

Martha Stewart Vanilla Cupcake Recipe

Buttercream Icing:

Martha Stewart Buttercream Icing

Directions:

Prepare the cupcakes according to the above recipe. Fill the liners about 1/4 to 1/2 full with batter. Place a reeses peanut butter cup upside down into the batter. Fill the liner to 3/4 full, covering the peanut butter cup.

While the cupcakes are baking, prepare the icing.

Prepare the icing according to the recipe above, deleting the vanilla. Once mixed, add creamy peanut butter 1 tablespoon at a time, to taste.

Allow cupcakes to cool completely before icing them. If desired, sprinkle crumbled peanut butter cup bits on top of the icing to add a little extra punch and give hint to the secret inside the cupcake.

Enjoy!
